Portugal With Kids: A Simple, Stress-Free Family Travel Guide

Traveling internationally with kids can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s to a new place or if it’s your first big trip as a family.
Portugal was a destination that surprised us in the best possible way. It was welcoming and more family-friendly than expected.

This post is the first in what will become a growing collection of real-world family travel guides here at Suitcase and Jet. Our goal is simple - to make family travel feel doable and enjoying, without overplanning or unrealistic expectations.

Why Portugal is a Great Place for Kids

Portugal checked a lot of boxes for us. It was safe and affordable, filled with experiences that appealed to us as adults and our kids. The pace was relaxed, and we were welcomed as a family everywhere we went.

What stood out most was how easy it was to get around, and how quick it was to get there!

What This Guide Covers

This Portugal guide is intentionally practical. Instead of a packed itinerary, you’ll find guidance based on what actually worked for our family.

Throughout this post (and future destination guides), you can expect:

  • Honest insights on what was worth our time

  • Tips for getting around with kids comfortably

  • Suggestions for where to stay with families in mind

  • Packing advice that keeps things simple

  • Lessons learned that will help you feel prepared and travel with more confidence

At Suitcase and Jet, we believe:

  • You don’t need to see everything to have a great trip

  • A handful of planned days are better than an overstuffed itinerary

  • Travel should fit your family, not the other way around

This is about traveling perfectly. It’s about traveling thoughtfully, with room for flexibility, spontaneity, and rest!
